Lockwire your rear wheel bolts.

Post by TREE on Thu Jan 31, 2008 2:29 pm

Occasionally you read of a BMW rider losing a rear wheel. ( I've seen 4 stories , no fun affraid )
Often they pull over before it happens but sometimes it is too late.
If the bolts are greased or anti-seize was used then your chances are worse.
All wheel bolts should be torqued down dry.

On a long trip I had brake rotor bolts start to unwind incrementally with each of 6 bolts backing out a bit less than the next one.
Quite weird and something I missed until a gas stop on the last 1000 kms of 19,000 km trip.
Only happened with one front rotor, the other was fine.
Lesson: always do a walk around at start of the day, you never know what you will find !

Wheel bolts have never given me a problem but I wanted to set them and forget them at highway speeds.
With my hubcap covering it I could never be sure whatís going on down there. Here is a lockwire job I did.
It may look half assed but that's for a reason.

When posted last year I got a lot of grief from anal mechanics who worship lockwire pliers.
I like them for racing, airplanes and helicopters but not in this case.
Others agreed it was overkill for my purpose and they would probably do the same.
You can decide which group you fit but I prefer not to hear about it one more time. Laughing

The bolt heads drill press out quite easily... remember to take off the sharp edges with a small countersink.
Always use stainless lockwire.
The advantage of this method is that you can get it off without cutters in the boonies and use it again to get home.

Thatís why it was done this way.

Ride safe !

I'll be adding this to my spring maintenance list for my RS. Now I wonder if I could find someone with a drill press who could help me drill out my wheel nuts? :-)

If anyone likes peanuts and has a drill press give me a call, cashews and pistachios are too rich for me. ;-)
