R1100 Splines Empty R1100 Splines

Post by keng Fri Feb 06, 2009 11:36 am

I'm getting deep into mid-winter maintenance and wondering if I should re-lube the splines on my R1100RT (1998 with 60,000 kms and unknown maintenance). It looks like quite a job to lube the transmission splines, since I need to remove the back end and fold up the frame to back off the transmission. Has anyone done this themselves, and is it even advisable? I seem to see differing opinions on the listserves. Lubing the rear drive splines looks much more practical so I'll definitely do that.

Not sure if the 98 models had many issues with input shaft splines....
At 60K you may want to wait until you need a new clutch job before you take it apart.
I have a CD tutorial here showing how to do an RT if you need it Ken.

There was some investigative work on the net (maybe ADV) pointing to a problem with the front transmission casting. Some bikes had a front plate that came from the supplier to Getrag with bolt holes drilled slightly offset. That was measured at 50 thou on one bike with a spline failure !
This causes the tranny to line up offset to the clutch female drive splines which chew a circle around the tranny
input shaft and generally start messing with the input splines.

My 1994 RS got a new clutch at 100K kms and the splines were pristine even though there was not a lot of lube there.
I used Honda spline lube for all 3 splines back to the rear drive.
If you search ADV and bmwrt.com for " splines " in topics you may get some better ideas on the years that were more affected.
Some good ones are HERE

Thanks Tree. Looks like more postings re 1150's than 1100's. Maybe I'll wait until I have to replace my clutch before venturing to the centre of the earth:-). Will take a good look at my tranny oil when I change it.

Would love to take a look at your DVD if possible though. There's lots I don't know yet!
