Try this again...

I had some problems with my ABS lights blinking alternately? on my R1100GS tried a few things recommended in the manual, even drove it to charge the battery then i googled it and found this remedy. took several tries probably the grounding to a proper contact point and it seems to have worked. hope it's helpful to others
cheers

Resetting ABS2 on early bike

  • Locate the diagnostic
connector under the seat. Remove it from the blanking plug.
  • Insert one end of 20 cm wire
into the middle socket of this connector.
  • Ground the other end firmly
to a metal bolt in the area (and keep grounded).
  • Turn on ignition. You should
    see the lights flash alternately.
  • Hold ABS button down for
about 8 seconds. The bottom ABS light will stay on, and the top one off.
  • Release the ABS button. If
you have successfully reset the ABS, both ABS lights will come on. If you
have failed to count to 8, or your ground is not good, the top ABS light
    will stay off.
  • Turn off ignition, remove
    wire.

After I put everything back together, I have the alternate flashing light problem. I reset as per above but no go. I then built a LED readout and am getting a fault 4 (rear speed sensor). I checked with an ohmeter and have about 150 Ohms resistance, but my meter isn't the best.
I've checked the clearance (this winter I've changed the rotor and brake pads), wiggled wires, etc. Finally ordered a used sensor from Beemerboneyard. Any wrenchs out there with suggestion of what to check while I wait for a new sensor (or after I get it and it doesn't solve the problem!) BTW, the flashing starts as soon as the key is turned on, before starting. I've ridden enough the battery would be up if it wasn't at the beginning.Running for awhile and resetting doesn't help so I don't think its a low battery (gell type)

Ken
It took several tries to find a good ground , I used the rear mounting of the rear shock ( under the seat) and I counted to 10 before turning the key. plus i did not turn on the bike just the ignition.... try again

Well Piet, when you're right, you're right! I tried once more, using a test box wired to the auxiliary power plug ground. Pressed ABS reset, turned key on, waited 10 seconds ... no diff. Released ABS reset, pressed again and lights reset after about 5 seconds. Began flashing together when I removed ground and turned key on again. Yes!!!

Went for a ride out to Enfield via Fall River and all appears normal. Now I have a spare rear speed sensor if anyone needs it. I'll keep in my spares box for now.
