Spring Awakening Empty Spring Awakening

Post by Alan Coles Mon Mar 06, 2017 5:14 pm

Further to our recent AGM, the Club is starting to work on putting together an early spring riding exercise to help everyone shake off the winter cobwebs.

We'll likely title it the BMWONS Spring Awakening or something like that and the idea is to try and have a two-fold approach.

  1. Video and written material
  2. Practical exercises

I will post some videos and material here, but more importantly, we are looking into getting a copy of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's video on Group Riding to show prior to the practical exercises. This will help remind people of the proper standardized procedures that are deemed safest for Group Riding to help ensure everyone is on the same page when out riding with friends, etc.

The written material will be additions to the Safe Riding and riding etiquette info that I posted some time ago. Again, this is to help us all refresh our memories on the recognized best-practices for rider safety so that when the weather warms up and we get back on the road there we'll have had an opportunity to refresh our memory.

Practical Exercises - we will try to secure a sufficiently large paved lot that we can close off to the general public and layout pylons for low-speed exercises in basic bike control to ease us back into riding, safe maneuvering, and bike control. Currently, we're looking at setting up the following:

  • Figure-of-eight
  • Slaloms (two) - 1st would be well spaced and easy - 2nd would be a bit tighter and require more concentration and control)
  • Straight line braking exercise

I'm not sure we'll get into emergency lane changes, etc., as this is meant to be exercises that shake off the cobwebs as opposed to a skills development situation. If there is sufficient interest in persuing skills development than we can address that if and when it arises.

PS - I'll see if Amedee or Shereef can alter the sub-forum heading of Rides and Events to Rides, Events and Riding Safety and then create a Riding Safety section below that so everything will be easily categorized and simpler to find.

I'm pretty sure I can sub divide the category using the forum editor.
There is a safety section tab or sub-tab on the website.
Remember forumpro newsgroup isn't the 'website'.

Yes, now that you mention that (it's found in the "more..." area of the website), I had wondered if it might be a good idea to have a link to that page in a "sticky" on the Forum "Safety" sub-section and visa-versa, but I'm getting ahead of myself again. ;-)
