"Attendance is mandatory for members of the gang."
That part caught my eyes ....

Excuse my ignorance, but with every mention of the Hells Angels, Police are always mentioning mass arrests, but what are these guys usually arrested or imprisoned for exactly?

Earlier this summer, i saw a guy with Hells Angels leather vest at the Fall River Tims, and he didn't seem to me like a serious threat or a criminal of some sort, just seemed like the normal "BadAss-wannabe" H-D rider ....

I grew up with these guys, or should I say, with the ones that used to be around. Most of the ones I grew up with and used to fight with, are either in jail or dead. Two of the guys I fought with when I was a kid went on to serve time for multiple murders and were themselves murdered along with their families. These are very real dangers.

The members really range range from fairly docile to sociopaths, and I've known both ends of that spectrum. What you have to always keep in mind is that even the relatively mild individual you encounter who appears to be normal and in most ways likely is, that person is part of a much larger group that has, at its core, a pack mentality that can turn from friendly and jovial to aggressive and deadly in the blink of an eye. I remember being at the grand opening of The Inn on the Lake in 1972 as the guest of the original President of the 13th Tribe (morphed into the local chapter of the Hell's Angels) along with his wife and a good friend of mine. We were in an upscale social setting with everything going fine duntil he got the feeling that my friend was getting too cozy with his wife. Before you knew it he had my friend by the throat in the middle of the packed dining room of the place.

About five years later I had a very similar thing happen to me at a night club in Vancouver with Randy Mersereau (co-founder of the Halifax Hell's Angels). Randy and I and his brother Kirk had fought several times in school, but we hadn't seen each other for perhaps 7-8 years and I happened to run into his girlfriend (whom I knew for many years) in the club while he was in the can. When he came out and saw us hugging he immediately slammed me against the wall and we just about went at it until his girlfriend pulled him off me and reminded him that it was me. Very much a "light-switch" reaction.

That and the fact that there are very few barriers or limits is where the danger arises. For the most part, whenever you have the Angels around things will be quite peacefull and relatively quiet and safe, unless something goes wrong or a rival comes into the mix, then anything can happen.

Believe me, there is usually plenty of criminal activity going on, but not in the open. Part of the Angels operating culture is to have their affiliate clubs do a lot of the street-level stuff and they orchestrate things where that is possible.
