Going for ride this afternoon 2016-05-27

Post by Alan Coles on Fri May 27, 2016 12:19 pm

Can't do the Sunday rides, Saturdays are the only weekend option usually open to me, but thought I'd try to break away this afternoon for a 2~ hour ride. Likely out past Mount Uniacke on the old road. Gonna try to get away at 2pm. Leave Tim Hortons, Bedford Commons, at 2pm if anyone has the same notion.

Had a good ride to Windsor and back via Highway-1. Planned to go farther but the rain took some of the fun out of it.

Trip there was 70-90 kph, 5-6 gear, and only one pass. The trip-computer just before Windsor showed an average fuel consumption of just 3.7L/100km. That's a whopping 76 mpg!

Trip back in the rain was 80-110 kph, 4-5-6 gear, and three passes resulted in an overall average for the entire trip of 4.0L/100km good enough for 70 mpg! About halfway to Windsor the bike showed an overall range to empty of over 600 km, by Lr. Sackville on the trip back it was down to a bit over the 500 km range, still pretty impressive.

You sound very pleased with that new bike Alan. Alister had told you not to drive it or you'd be hooked! I had a nice drive back from Canso yesterday on my RT. Nothing like purring along at 130 km/hr and enjoying the fresh air and smells of spring. Ride safe!

Yes Ken, that's always the problem with most pretty baubles, if they've got real substance behind them they're a difficult thing to walk away from. However, why would one want to? I feel quite fortunate that the bike is what I'd expected/hoped it would be. I'd tried to ride one last year during the Atlantic Motoplex BMW Demo Day, but had an appointment that didn't allow it to happen. Troy offered to provide one latter but I was quite busy and only able to get up for the Ducati Demo Day and never able to do anything more than swing a leg over an RTW, no riding before I bought it.

You're quite right about the joys of riding, especially in the spring. My ride last week from Guelph to Bedford via the White Mountain National Forest was a great testament to that.

I've got another really nice ride planned for next month, but it will be on the R1150RT. Sold it yesterday to a fellow in Northern Ontario and we're going to meet halfway (Montreal) so, I've laid-out a ride through Central-western Maine that will take me across the Appalachians via Bigelow Preserve and into rural Southeastern Quebec through Sherbrooke, Magog, etc. It's been 42 years since I've ridden a motorcycle through that part of Quebec and I just attended the funeral this spring of a good biking friend of mine who rode through that area with me back in 1974 (me on my Norton 850 Commando and him on his BSA 650 Lightning), so I'm feeling that it will be a very bitter-sweet ride that will give me plenty of time to reminisce about the thousands of miles he and I rode together back then, and reinforce my gratitude that I'm still here and still able to ride.

Just had another friend from back then drop by the house yesterday to see the RTW and he goes into the hospital this week for major knee surgery and doesn't know if/when he'll be able to ride again.

So, ride'm if you got'em and enjoy, and as you say Ken, ride safe.
